Entrepreneurs, gardeners, artists, environmentalists, and philanthropists all share one thing in common: Their motivating force comes from inside themselves. That is the first step toward making meaning.
Making meaning investments in the things we value comes next. But the world isn’t constructed to help us do that. Life gets busy – child care, elder care, careers, home and car maintenance, and daily chores consume our lives. If you don’t make space for investing in meaning you’re bound to be disappointed in the most important parts of your life.
Making Meaning as a Business Owner
In my eight years as a business and marketing consultant for two New Jersey Small Business Development Centers, I met many people with innovative and exciting ideas for starting their own businesses.
Whether these clients came for help with business planning, marketing, financing and expansion, or maintaining market share, all had one thing in common. They were real people, who wanted to birth their dreams into the real world.
But much of business owners’ time is spent on practical matters that have little to do with the vision and enjoyable aspects of why they established it. The difference between the entrepreneurs who are successful and those whose dreams die on the vine is their ability to acknowledge and execute the exhausting work that is necessary to run a business. They are able to build a bridge that connects the meaning their business holds for them to the mundane activities necessary to keep it afloat.
Cultivating the Inner Entrepreneur coaching is all about making that process conscious.
I work with people who are struggling with purpose, meaning, and life choice issues related to operating a business: Entrepreneurs who want to make better choices that result in a life’s work that speaks to their souls.
